![]() ![]() Best Scanner Mac Security IsThat maybe a technique issue, but it is a hell of a lot easier to use a scanner which is designed to do exactly that. I'm not impressed with the results. Just about anything from Minolta or Nikon is going to give great results, but will have to be a used one.An Epson flatbed doesn't give too bad results, I reckon my V550 ($150) gives about 75% of what I can get out of the Minolta Scanner.I haven't upgraded to Big Sur yet, but ViewScan and the scanner works fine in Catalina.I have tried using a camera to do the "scanning", I have a reasonable macro setup and a dedicated slide copier attachment for the bellows. Even when not in a pandemic, I sent the slides out in batches, so if one went astray, I wouldn't lose anything.For a slide scanner, I'd recommend using VueScan, whatever hardware you get.For hardware, I personally I use a Minolta Scan Elite 3500 (bought new in 2005), just about the best slide scanner made (apart from maybe the Scan Elite 3500 II). That wasn't during a pandemic though, but I haven't had much shipping issues during the pandemic either. With both, there is the time to clean the slides and put them in place.But once the flatbed scanner is setup and slides (mine takes 4 slides) are in place, the scan time for, say 6400 dpi, can be a minute or so, then there is the cropping for each picture and saving each with an appropriate file name.With film holder like the above and a camera properly aligned, there should be little need to crop and no need to assign a file name, so I think it should go a good deal faster.Here's a link to a useful web page. Using it with a light source (even an iPad) and a camera stand (I can rig my tripod for use) would, I think, be faster and as good as a flatbed slide scanner:Although I currently use my Epson scanner, that's time consuming compared to what I think using a camera setup would be.
